The Micheaux Award & Film Labs

The Micheaux Award and Film Labs are designed to promote creative and professional development for filmmakers of color through two initiatives: The Micheaux Award which distributes funds annually to filmmakers of color; and The Micheaux Film Labs, which facilitates year-round educational and networking opportunities to strengthen the Arkansas-based creative communities of color. The Micheaux Award and Film Labs encourage diverse content creation, equip filmmakers of color to tell their own stories, and cultivate audiences that are truly reflective of our communities.

Three areas of focus for the educational/networking plan:

  • Technical filmmaking

  • Business fundamentals

  • Networking opportunities

The Micheaux Award and Film Labs are open to any filmmaker of color living and working in Arkansas, or with a historical connection to the state. This includes citizens of Native Nations whose ancestral lands and whose Nations were formerly located within the borders of what is now Arkansas, and also citizens of Native Nations whose ancestors were forced to emigrate through Arkansas as a result of federal Indian Removal policies. Caddo, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Delaware, Kickapoo, Osage, Peoria, Quapaw, Shawnee, and Tunica Tribes and Nations are all encouraged to apply. Applications are also open to any filmmaker of color who was born in or is otherwise connected to the state.
